Yup. He pretty much hits the nail on the head. The "Buy it if you like it" is how the vast majority of people, including myself, go about getting music. I download a fuckton, listen through, delete the crap that I won't listen to on a regular basis, and support the artists that I feel deserve it. I usually won't support by buying CDs though because I just straight up don't use them anymore. I'll buy on iTunes (which after reading this I'm reconsidering) or support them by buying merch/going to shows/etc.

It's a pretty easy concept, but the record industries want none of it.

I miss OiNK so much, btw. Best torrent site I was ever on, by far. And What.CD isn't that great at all - everyone talks like it's the replacement for OiNK, but I know personally that What doesn't have very much content and have heard that Waffles isn't doing so hot either.

It's a potentially endless debate but I don't really dig the whole mp3 thing as a whole. It's pretty handy & I download alot of music, I guess in a try before buying way but you seriously can't beat scouring record stores for the hidden treasures.

Generally I won't buy anything without some sort of knowledge of what it is, whether that be reviews, hearsay or whatever but I just like having the package. Some people put such incredible work into the packaging of their music and it's a shame that some people will never see it. For me it's kind of the whole deal.

I guess it's a collector/material thing. Godspeed you black emperor and anything else on Constelation just isn't the same unless it is heard on vinyl, especially with the time and effort that is put into the sleeve, in my opinion. This coming from the guy who prefers to listen to certain music on different formats 'for the effect'. Listen to My Bloody Valentines 'Loveless' on tape and you will understand what I mean. It's the warmth....

Mp3 is just such a shitty format, although I love it. It's possibly one of the best things to happen in the music world for a long time and travelling would be rubbish without it. I suppose you will always have people who care (read: elitist) about the quality and people who don't.

Although it doesn't really matter with the quality of most computers sound cards. Unless you're a producer the chances are the DAC is shit.

As an example I burnt a 128 mp3 rip of a cd I own and compared my laptop to my NAD c-521. Playing the cd vs 128 on the laptop made no difference, whilst it did on the cd player. The most surprising difference though was 128->cd vs the laptop playing 128. It just sounded so much fuller because the dac was better.
