Breakcore n00b - Thrashing things up in FL8....Hints N Tips?
Greetings.
I'm all new to this so bear with me. Coming from a Metal/Stoner/Doom background I have gone through ambient/DnB to the Sonic Nirvana that is Breakcore.
In short, freaking loving it.
I have been using FL6 for the last year, making DnB/Breakbeat tunes for my own amusement based around horror movies and samples. Now with a legit version of FL8 I'm looking to step up and start assembling/disembling some Breakcore.
Before FL8 I have been using Audactiy to cut up beats, edit together and produced the snare rushes etc. Having only had FL8 a week, am getting to grips with Edision and the other new features.
Tunes-wise it's the usual suspects in VS, Squarepusher, Hoonboy, Blaerg, Servants of the Apocalyptic Goat Rave and Rotator. Not wishing to strictly copy any of these, but more a sonic springboard of ideas.
So, any FL users have any tips for creating beats/FX etc? I have trigga and glitch plugins (along with the awesome Bertrill!!!) and would really appreciate any manual tips. I know the real success lies in putting in a lot of time...

Yeah definitely use the slicer instead. Unless you are just wanting one or two hits from a break, this is by far the better, easier, quicker etc. way to do it. I like it because it means you already have all your beats in front of you from the start. I like to get the standard break and its reverse in the same piano roll so I have more to work with. To be honest though, I've only been doing this for a couple of months so I'm sure there's some better tips coming your way.
Nice one for being a Hoonboy fan. He's the shit! Plus, anyone who likes Servants of the Apocalyptic Goat Rave is a friend of mine!

if you feel lazy and you know yer not gonna do anything interesting with the sequencer then use the slicer, it kinda limits you to what should be done with a break but i suggest taking a break after you have modified it and set it to the tempo you like, throw that bitch in a wav editor and chop it.
chopping is one of the best and funnest parts about making a song.
the feeling of loading yer single shots to a sequencer is very rewarding once you set it all up.
but i use both my break and single shots that were chopped in the sequencer.
get shit done dude, you don't have to only use the sequencer and fruity slicer, you can also use the granulizer, wav travler and ftt for making breaks
the sky is the limit and you can pretty much do what ever youwant so don't limit yerself.
boh!

Thanks for the tips,
I found any glitch/trigger plugin so far to never sound as natural as it should, so am focusing on making my own beats via slicer - then messing them up in the Piano Roll. There is nothing better than finding the fine line between music and mashup - then at times, totally obliterating everything into a wall of noise.
The most detrimental(ist) thing about Breakcore for me is the current lack of sleep. When I'm at work - listening to/ learning from Breakcore, when I'm home - attempting to make Breakcore. Not.Enough.Hours.In.The.Day.
Still, it seems to have helped my tinnitus!!

I'll agree with everyone else really, the Slicer is my most used tool. Like you I use Audacity, but only to steal a sample or a break. For example, I could sample 1 bar of the Amen Break from the original Winston's track. Then load it in to the Slicer and drag the BPM in the corner of the Slicer's channel settings to 4, 8, 12 or 16 BPM to ensure I was working in a regular tie signature. Then it's a case of using the piano roll to re-assemble the various hits in your break in any way you see fit.
Some people prefer to use some of the cutting tools to break the loop in to tiny fragments so you can achieve snare rushes and ultra fast edits, but I prefer to compensate and just set my songs BPM to at least 700, that way my chopped pieces appear physically larger and are easier to grab with the mouse, saves me zooming in and out all the while.
Glitch is a bit ok to use for a second here or there when performing live, but as soon as you start using it for too long, anyone who is familiar with Glitch will be like "Hmmmm, sounds like he's turned Glitch on". Manual edits are always the best imho.
Oh, and The Granualizer is awesome if you can stretch properly, because you can really start meddling with the pitch of a break for ultra lols. It also has the tasty hold function, giving you a nice sample rush.

I usually just throw beats down into the lower section of the playlist and slice them there. Really easy way to make at least hip-hop and DnB beats. Does not work so well for really fast stuff, like breakcore...
For one thing, you can't modify the pitch when you do it that way, so no pitch-decaying snare rushes.
So, whenever I'm making breakcore, Slicer all the way.
Just dump to piano roll, and you can edit tons of stuff right in there.

Well, you can by doing an automation on the pitchwheel, but it's alot more complicated than using slicex from the start.
