Hi there,

I've been messing around with fruity loops, adobe audition etc for years but not really got anywhere.

I want to start using midi but i just can't figure it out lol

My set up is

Microkorg
Kaoss Pad 3
Line 6 UX1
Midi lead
2 guitar leads
usb to kaoss pad lead
adobe audition
ableton live (lite)
Fruity loops 8
HP Laptop

Using this gear could anyone instruct me on how I can play the micro korg through the kaoss pad and send the midi data to my laptop or how to play samples from laptop on microkorg???

Sorry about this probably pathetic question. Thanks for your help in advance.

Ps i don't get all the midi channel stuff.

You can play samples on your microkorg by controlling a sample vst on your laptop and assigning different samples to notes... or is that not what you're asking?

Yeah that's one of the things I'm asking, I don't know how to set it up?!? I've managed to previously assign keys on my laptop keyboard to trigger samples but not with an actual keyboard. (with ableton)

I'm pretty good with sampled stuff using adobe to edit and fruity loops to chop and construct and then back in to adobe for finishing touches but this midi stuff has just got me confused.

I've been coming on here for ages but only just plucked up the courage to sign up and ask...pretty lame!

where are you plugging in your midi cable?

you should be connecting the midi out on your korg to a midi in port on your pc. as far as i can tell from the korg site the KP3 doesnt act as a sound/midicard for a pc so you cant plug your synth into it via midi and expect the information to get to the computer. if the kp3 manual however says that you can do this then fruityloops should be able to tell you that it is receiving midi data when you press a key on your synth. if it isnt then you either need to make sure that the synth is set to send midi note data (consult the manual) or that fruityloops is set to receive midi note data from the device (kp3 if it says it can do this, consult the manual), or buy a new midi lead.

my guess is that you need a midi interface for your pc if you dont have one, these can be bought for around £20

thanks John for taking the time to reply.

I'm plugging the microkorg into the KP3 with the midi cable and then using the KP3 as the midi interface via usb to laptop. I think this should work but it's the settings bit I don't understand. I set the midi channel on the microkorg to 1 but I can't figure out how to sort the KP3 out. I get as far as pressing shift and the message button but then I get lost lol. it comes up with channel 1 but I don't know what to press. Sorry, I am being so lame!!!

Can you hook up your microkorg by USB to your laptop? If so you can use it as a midi controller easy with Ableton. Or if you want to record sound from the microkorg into ableton you can do that too since its a stand alone synth too.

Usually Kaospad owners run the laptops output thru the Kaospad and then out to the stereo, PA system or whatever so they can effect the output. But you could also do that if you ran the microkorg thru the kp3 and then into the laptop, but it would only effect the synth sounds you record from it and not midi.

Have you got the drivers of the microkorg?
I have a nanopad and without the official drivers I can´t use the nanopad in 2 or more software at the same time.

I don't believe I have got drivers for the microkorg however i do have them for the kaoss pad. I think the whole midi thing might be a bit too complicated for my small brain. Might just stick to using them audio in wise.

I just like the idea of being able to trigger samples with the synth which needs to go through the kaoss pad as i don't have a midi interface and being able to change the sound once it's recorded.

plugging your microkorg into your pc should be simple via midi and fruity/ableton have pretty good autodetect functions for midi devices. does the Kaoss Pad 3 manual specifically say that it will work as a midi interface via the usb connection? I couldnt find a reference to that online. if it doesnt say that it can operate like that then you will need a different midi device for your pc.

also the midi channel thing is easy. you have 16 of them. it is so that if you had say 3 devices being controlled via midi, say 2 synths and a drum machine, they would each be set to only listen to one channel of information so you can send them different info down the one cable and they wont get confused

Hi John,

In the manual for the KP3 it says "using KP3 as an effect processor under midi control" and "using KP3 as a midi controller (EXT CTRL mode)". It tells you how to set the midi channel so I set Microkorg to channel 1 with the cable going into the Kaoss pad and USB to laptop.
So it looks like I've got the Microkorg bit sorted but I can figure out the midi setting stuff on the KP3. I don't really understand setting the messages etc. I get as far as trying to set the channel as 1 on the Kaoss pad then give up.

this means having something else controlling the kaoss pad, like you could get your computer to tell it what to do instead of using the X-Y pad.

"using KP3 as a midi controller (EXT CTRL mode)"

this means using the KP3 to control other devices using the X-Y controller and I guess that slider too, in the way that you want your microkorg to control your pc.

Neither of these functions make it a MIDI interface. If it doesn't specifically say you can route another MIDI device through it then you probably can't
