:!: Blue screen of death - HELP!

Postby cornishacid » Thu Aug 21, 2008 10:23 am

Recently my laptop has been displaying the blue screen of death (hope you know what i mean) and then restarting. Other than that it has been running fine. It only has a 30g hard drive and im down to 3g - could it be this or maybe a virus?

Im fucking scared because every piece of music i have ever done is on there along with a hefty amount of samples.

I got an external hard drive yesterday to back everything up but all it does is make a clicking noise when i plug it in.

bah fucksticks.

When your computer comes across a critical system error the BSOD appears and shuts everything down to prevent damage. It's usually because of a kernel error, not lack of space on your hard drive.

Most of the time the BSOD is a one-off occurrence, however if it keeps happening uninstall and disable your external hard drive and start your computer in safe mode and disabling BIOS memory options (F8 -> Advanced Startup Options -> Safe Mode). Hope that helps!

If it's not reading your external hard drive, uninstall -> reinstall. If that doesn't work (and because you didn't meantion specifics of your HD/OS), just go here for troubleshooting.

But no you won't lose data rebooting in safe mode (but only do that if you get the BSOD again).

"99% of the complaints on portable hard drives can be related to the insufficient power supply from the USB port (especially the case for laptops), please try to connect the black power cable first, then connect the grey cable, this will solve most of the problems."

^ i think it's probaly down to that. although im pretty certain i have a usb 2.0.

i think ill have to get a different one.

cheers for your help bud.

make sure you plug the external into the usb before you turn the power on.

it's clicking or glitching? put your ear next to it when it makes that noise, and if it sounds like breakcore that means the reader died.

yeah get yo shit backed up mate.

Any idea what caused the blue-screens in the first place? It's usually down to faulty hardware or their drivers, or dodgy kernel-level code as Thallium said. Or... it could be because your laptop is overheating, cos then your CPU can go nuts and attempt to execute garbage instructions or try and write all over protected memory pages etc which would drop you into a BSOD.

that's assuming you dont run windows 98 or some shit, in which case it could be because it just doesn't like you.
