Recommendations for a beginner

Hey all

I'm new to breakcore (I have more of a background in extreme metal). So far, I have heard the work of Enduser, Shitmat, and Venetian Snares (listening to their song Hajnal right now) - all of it has been amazing, great stuff.

I'll definitely be looking much further into breakcore. To get a sort of bearing, I thought I'd post a topic asking for some recommendations from you. What breakcore artists would you recommend to a beginner? Also, what albums would you say are essential (though not necessarily viewed as accessible for a beginner)? I'm eager to listen to as much of this as I can (the faster it is, and more fucked up it is, the better), so any input from you would be appreciated.

You picked a good few artists to start off on for sure. Coming from a metal background, you should love Drumcorps. Also, Bong Ra was one of the first I heard. Get some of his stuff too.

Oh, I was using "their" in a gender neutral way, as I wasn't sure what gender the person behind Venetian Snares is. I know now, anyway.

I'm listening to Drumcorps right now and some of this does seem pretty good. Definitely worth looking into - thanks for the recommendation.

Also, Bong Ra was one of the first I heard. Get some of his stuff too.

Oh yeah, Bong-Ra - also familiar with them (downloaded a Bong-Ra/Enduser/Shitmat split the other day). Pretty good.


Right now, I'm listening to "Break Beathoven Got Heroin" by Trippmatic. Great stuff. Feels a bit unusual listening to an hour long track (being used to conventional, typically-under-10-minute tracks), but it's a good stuff.

Oh, and on the topic of Bong-Ra now... If you haven't already, get Stereohype Heroin Hooker. It's four tracks by him, and then two remixed versions of each of the four by various other producers. Great way to get an idea of some of their styles.

What I've heard of Abelcain is badass too. Be sure to check out "The Garden".

my personal favorite is "pain free sound institue" from drop name records, that has some classics on it.



and get some fucking ladyscraper - the death of mary poppings is free and probally the best record of last year.

then there are those, who use common rhythms like amen break a lot, and make their tracks sound traditional, like Bong-Ra, Enduser

then there are those who really started to create their own sound. "it doesn't matter what samples you use, it has to sound weird at the end".

the ones who are influenced by Metal, like Drumcorps

the ones who are influenced by early rave, like Duran Duran Duran.

those who were influenced by Hardcore/Gabber


that were just a few examples. there's no way breakcore can be described perfectly. it's just a hybrid.
