IDM?

Postby Draegg » Wed Jan 27, 2010 1:12 am

It´s the worst name for a genre EVER and everybody seems to have different opinions on what it is and what it´s not...I give you IDM A.K.A
"Intelligent dance music" or "Braindance". Im just curious about what you guys think of it, Best artists, worst artists, yadda yadda, you get it.

My own personal favourites remain:

Xploding Plastix
The flashbulb
Wisp
Clark

I love the fact that you can really chill out to idm, as opposed to Breakcore, but am i wrong to think that the two genres arent that far from each other? What separates idm from breakcore (besides mad distortion and a fetish/secret desire for britney spears acapellas)?

Guh.
The most enjoyable part of IDM is the irony in it's name. (that's relative to the artist really)

IDM isn't a very useful term, it kinda implies that anything that isn't IDM is automatically unintelligent. The problem with that some stuff branded as IDM is so totally not dance music, at all. I wouldn't call Breakcore dance music, and some of these beeps and whale calls that come out of the minimal/idm scene are not dancefloor friendly either. Maybe IDM could encompass Breakcore, but they don't have to be that far apart. Stuff by Wisp, Aphex (Drukqs) and Squarepusher would not sound out of place on a Breakcore compilation at all. Some stuff by Venetian snares, Xanopticon and the Flashbulb could similarly be called IDM if it was simply marketted in that way.

Braindance is just a lame genre name, it's like bands that called themselves "post-melodic hardcore" because they weren't man enough to admit that they were emo.

i like puzzleweasle, richard devine stuff, Nest, spill drop, signal.

the thing is talking about IDM is not considering it as more intelligent than other, the notion of art doesn't imply things like good/bad nice/ugly, it's just art, except in breakcore cos it sucks :P
when you talk about idm, you mean something that's not made to be a dance track.

Yeah for me IDM is just music that doesn't conform to any rules and regulations that genre's impose on music. It can be 30 bpm to 3000bpm and encompass many different styles from industrial to ambient. If you make something that you can't place in an existing genre just call it IDM.

My favourite artists are Datach'i, Autechre, Proem, Aphex, u-ziq, Mr projectile, Uniform..........The list is endless :D

I'd rather see IDM used to describe dance music with a sort of socio political maturity.

1 years ago I have read a realy exelent way to describe IDM in a french website about electronic music. The guy who wrote that was talking about a Clark release and he said : " this is a music you have dance with your brain and think with your legs "

That french poetry hehehe

But realy i think it's a good way to explain this music

i think of it like if it's too crappy to be something else it's IDM

i like a lot of the artists mentioned here, but i always think of IDM as a bit of a joke term, like most people think it's crap, but it's not, it's just too 'intelligent' for them. smart people can hear past the fact that you didn't master it or arrange it well and hear how intelligent you are

it's exactly what it says it is. it's smarter than you, but you can still beat it up in the parking lot. but in twenty years it will be rich and you will be fat and divorced and work at mcdonalds.
