breakcores subcultures

Postby Dj Doreetoh » Fri Oct 12, 2007 5:10 pm

ive heard in notes on breakcore doc. about "breakcore punks" is this a new type of punk? is this the main subculture following of breakcore?

have they a scene like otehr punks do? or is it just gabbers and head bangers and speed freaks and general weirdoes/hippys following breakcore?

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't one of the originating groups in early breakcore Atari Teenage Riot, who were essentially a punk band? I think saying "breakcore punks" is more referring to the D.I.Y. attitude of breakcore in both the production and the distribution along with the more anarchistic tendencies of the movement closely relating to the emergence of punk in the late 70s. There are punks that listen to breakcore but I don't think it's some new subcultre.

based on my personal experience loads of punks listen to breakcore. I recently helped run a rave in a squat up in sheffield and the crowd was made up of anyone from dreadlocked bearded hippies to old school punks all raving away. And as Silent Frog has pointed out Atari teenage riot have strong elements of both punk and breakcore.

Chortle.

I doubt punks make up the core of Breakcore fans, i've found followers and producers from most musical backgrounds. I myself come from that sort of rock/punk/pretentious art-punk background with regards to music.

It very much depends how you view Breakcore, partcularly if you're a producer. Some people love it because it's fast and heavy and good to dance to (The kind of rave backgrounds), whereas other people see it as 'recontextualising' existing sounds, and inject their own interpretations of post modernism and surrealism et cetera in to the mix, to create a big lesbian curry. In saying that, you can kinda be arty and have fun at the same time, it's when you take yourself hyper seriously (i.e everyone on DHR) that you cross the boundary between fun art and chin stroking wanker art.

But yes, in answer to your main query, there are some punks in Breakcore, although the other guys have already clarified that really.

I can't really think of a better example of the whole punk/breakcore thing than Grinderhallerxxx. The singer of a punk metal band (Casey Chaos of Amen in case you didn't already know) collaborating with Cardopusher and Speedranch.

the main things i love in breakcore is that d.i.y. attitude and self-irony
..and as it has been said before, it connects different people...punks, hippies, ravers, metalheads, FREAKS, WEIRDOS, some random headfullofdrugs ppl etc etc...and it is all open-minded and tolerant about the hole thing =)
