Yeah, you have to quantize if you want to use hits from anywhere in the break otherwise you'll get gaps!


Depends on your software, I guess... I use ReCycle and Reason 3 so you can make slices and then it uses MIDI data to keep the same groove as the original sample. I guess I had a misunderstanding for a long time that part of the point of using a break is that there's a human element to the timing which makes it "feel" more natural (like the timing between the ride cymbal and the ghost notes, and how it's never *exactly* 16ths)... but for breakcore when your tempos are much faster than the original loop, anyways... might as well just quantize it. But staying true to the original feel is probably way more important in down-tempo music, like hip-hop.
