Operating system on your computer.

Postby rtificial » Tue Oct 09, 2007 5:47 pm

I was just curious about what operating system everyone used on their comps for music production. On my old comp I was using windows XP media center edition and it gave me some shit with my midi devices later on. Now I'm on windows vista:ultimate and if it gives me some shit with my midi devices I'm gonna go berserk. So what operating system do you use and how do you like it?

I am Unix freak, I used Linux, FreeBSD and shit for geeking, however when it comes to music there is absolutely no good software. You can use ardour or EnergyXT 2 on linux, but forget about VST's, how can you produce anything you say? Only with windows emulation, I've got tired of this and installed windows as second operating system. I would be glad to buy Mac as it is sort of Unix like, but I don't have anough money...

God damn man heh, surprised that thing is still running. I actually wouldn't mind running some mac's if I didn't already have a bunch of software, vst's and stuff built up for the PC.

Tonight I'm gonna try and get some of my software installed and hope to get my midi's running also. My hard drive crashed/died on me a week after I got a new midi keyboard.....talk about a kick to the nuts.

I use both Windows and Mac.

It's generally easier for finding VST's and such on Windows than it is on Mac - for every plugin I get for GarageBand/Logic on Mac, I have to make sure it's a universal binary first. With Windows, that problem isn't there.

But then, I prefer GarageBand over FruityLoops on Windows. But GarageBand's tempo can only go up to like... 240 I think. So, it depends what kind of music I feel like making. If it were breakcore or something similarly fast, I'd be on Fruity Loops and Windows. Anything else just depends if I need my Windows VSTs or not - if I don't, then I'll make my song on the Mac.

So yeah. Each side has its pros and its cons for me... And was never much a fan of Linux. I mean, if I can't even find compatible audio drivers for my computer, how am I supposed to make music?! Haha. :P

I use xp, but that's because I grew up using windows and still feel kind of weird anytime I have to use a mac. I've recently been becoming more comfy with them, but I'm waaay to cheap to buy one. I still think 98 ran way better than xp.
