VSTs can be instruments, too.

But that said, I have absolutely no clue what the difference is.

umm, pretty basic stuff.

a VST operates on an input signal. then outputs the result. It's a DSP.
a VSTi has output *only*. it synthesises sound using oscillators/whatever etc.

i dont really know what that means so im gonna take guess.

does that mean that a VST has to have like a external thing to control it, like a keyboard plugged up to your computer?

Alright, I got it. So Mark was right too, then.

Now that I look at my plugins, that's accurate. PoiZone, ToxicIII, the Korg Legacy Synths - all are labeled as VSTi. Then ones like AutoTune and Ozone are VST.

Vst is there for adding effects on samples or sounds, like adding flange distortion etc, and vsti's create everything, thus a synthesisers, or atleast that is what i believe, and was brought up to believe.
