Also the converters make a big deal if you record external sources.
Better sound cards have better converters making it possible to come closer to the original sound losing less punch or definition while recording.

A sound card is a piece of hardware that processes sound as either digital sequences or analog waveforms and outputs them to sound devices most also take inputs from recording devices.Music sound cards typically don't have "EAX" support or any of the other techno babble associated with gaming cards.The sound card is the actual hardware needed to make sound come out of the speakers.

The NI Audio Kontrol is a good card to start with, it comes with a free NI plugin of choice from a select list, which includes I believe.. Massive, Absynth, Guitar Rigs, and the FM thing they have.
It's about 160 bucks where I come from.
