Korg Electibe MX-1 For Live

Postby manic » Sat Oct 02, 2010 12:57 pm

Would you guys recommend using one of these in a live setup, I have seen Enter Shikari use it for their Sorry Your Not A Winner Interlude and it seems pretty sweet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98Qy6FhugBY). It is either the EMX-1 or and Novation Ableton Control Surface.

I am open to opinion.

If ya git an EMX-1 like I have git the new one that is SD card compatible. Unless you like carrying a few cards around... Stupid Korg! It's super fun tho. :D

What's the difference between the MX and the SX? they both cost the same, look practically the same and have the same features... I don't get it, other than a couple of knobs they seem to be identical

MX is a drum machine/synth combo and the SX is strictly a sampler (though you can sort of do wavetable synthesis by loading single cycle waveforms into the keyboard parts.

Oh, and to the OP, Yes, these machines are pretty much made for live, on the fly stuff. Smartmedia is really not that bad if you pick up a 128mb card, which can hold about 4 complete data sets at a time. Should be more than enough to keep you busy.

I have Korg - EMX and it´s pretty good for live performance for me. I read somewhere that emx isn´t so good for producing breakcore, but i think you can make good tunes on it, but you must play with it bit more, like with settings of drums etc. I use emx and kp3 for live + sometimes ableton, but i want to buy also esx and made it just with this machines, i like it more than using computer haha.

have both emx and esx: awesome gear for it's price.
don't realy like the sampler (esx), i do like the emx. but that's personal

used it as module. -> ableton set up sending midi to play the drums and 5 synths.
used it as standalone groovebox.
and now i use it as the core in my setup. using the sounds within and sequencing external gear with it.

- very versatile (module, fx, sequencer, groovebox)
- can record knob movement -> automation (korg calls it 'motion rec')
- pretty solid/not build like a tank - still close to
- send/receive midi cc
- good price for what you get

- all parts of drums and synths are in the same time signature
- only 2 outs/ 4 when panned
- when a part (synth, snare, kick,...) is muted and you want to select it, you can't without unmuting the track
