I use some crazy hodgepodge of programs. I switch between trackers (I'm pretty new, trying to find what works for me), thinking between Renoise or MODPlug, I like them both but it's a tough call. I use Audacity for arranging and effects, and to master entire tracks I use Soundbooth. It sucks for individual editing, but it gets the job done.
You know you have a problem when you fall asleep to speedcore.
A series of tips for making a simple break and bassline:
1) Set the master tempo in your DAW to 220 or thereabouts, then load a D 'n' B style break into a beat slicer.
2) Start playing it on loop, and tweak it as you listen. Some easy ways to do this (*At least in FL Studio*) are using the note slicer to cut up one note into several pieces, using the autochopper thingy to cut a not into as many pieces as possible, repeating 3 or 4 note sections and editing the pich of individual slices.
For a bassline: Learn some basic music theory, if you want just what you need for breakcore remember Dorian mode (*Good for lots of Industrial too*) some minor keys, and how to use dissonance well (*Read as sparingly*) For programing a synth, learn how filters work, and what sounds the basic waveforms make. (*There are also a lot of really superb Reese style bass tuts online if you use the google*)
That's most of what I know, and if all else fails BE PATIENT AND PRACTICE. Oh, and HAVE FUN!!!! :3
