Fucking up breaks

Postby obstreperosity » Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:19 pm

How do you get that super rushed frenzied sound like that of dev/null besides spending hours on a few bars. Any good free vsts (particularly a stutter) people could advise me?

LiveCut (www.smartelectronix.com)
dblue Glitch(www.illformed.org)
Give them a try(freebies by the way..)!

But I think "manual" rolling & stuttering sounds better ('cause you're in control:)) So I usually record LiveCut's output and tweak'n'process further!

i'm afraid it's "spending hours on a few bars" :)

Don't worry, you'll get faster at it as you practice more and you'll learn what will sound right without having to play it over and over again.

dev/null's one of my favourites. He uses hits from lots of different sources with distortion and compression to make them 'gel' right. Try playing two different hits at once (percussion or just random stuff) to create new sounds and add variation. Also, a few VSTs do help; fx and cutup things like dblue_glitch, supatrigga etc. Although don't go overboard as most producers will smell them a mile off ;p. Speaking of dev/null, i know he's a linux user so it's possible he's developed his own VST or something to help compose his unique sound.

Try loading a track into a wav editor and find a clean section with drums only. Go through hit-by-hit and imitate it in your sequencer and should become clear what you need to do ..

manual programing everytime. as for rolls just sequence a bunch of hits close together and use velocity or volume automation to get the effect of a roll.

personally, I prefer to do it manually... if you need a program to program your drums, either quit or learn how to program drums. no sense in being lazy about it.

I work in reason, so I like slicing up loops in recycle, then using the rex... pretty fun as far as I'm concerned... to have it done automatically would bore me.

What about arrpeggiators (i'm sure i didn't spell that right)? If you have your underlying beat layed out seems you could easily get a lot of variations that way. I haven't come accross a software plugin that works yet, tho.
