This probably isn't the forum to say this in, but I really hate the Amen.

It seems you are in fact among friends here. The general consensus is that the Amen is over-used and over-relied upon.

*relaxes*

As it happens, I'm more about the industrial and cyber stuff, really here more for a different perspective on techniques and stuff to use.

I think that yes, I have a problem with Amen being overused, but in and of itself it's got a frequency range I don't like for percussion and the rhythm doesn't phrase well unless you hack it to pieces. Good tracks that use the Amen are good in spite of it, not because of it. Hacking up an Amen to get a good percussion element is a test of skill and judgment, but I hew to the ethic that if you're making music you're there to entertain the audience, not show off. Forgetting that is what killed Jazz, for example, when it became the artform where the performers are usually having more fun than the audience.

I think alot people in audiences at breakcore/jungle shows don't know or don't care what an amen is. If you ever go to a show and someone is playing something without an amen people start to loose interest. Drop an amen and BLAM! People go mental. The only people I've ever come across who don't like the amen are other producers whose only complaint seems to be that it is over used. To me thats like saying the 303 is overused in acid techno.

agreed 100%. When an amen drops out of a huge rig .... WAHH!!!. Oh yes. Bits of me fall off, haha. I suppose some producers are a little pissed that their efforts to do something a bit different aren't as appreciated as much as they'd hope for. But then, you gotta ask them who they're making music for.....

that's a bad example because that is just a synth that is always imitated and naver emulated, it's hard for other synths to achieve that warm anolog sound with that sweet pitch bend/slide. acid is it's own sound alone, the very sound itse;f has leaked into the fabric of mainstream music culture from porn music to car comercial music. al because some black dude didn't know how to work his 303. i respect acid being that the orgin of it is that awesome and simple.

then again there was another dude just being inovative and look what it started.

with out acid there would be no. . . . . AFX ACID!!!!!

i feel sorry for those producers who you fail to mention, anyone making music to get some internet props is doing it for the wrong reason.

i think people fail to remember that most breakcore shows over here in the us is mainly attended by fellow dj's and producers, even people who don't produce know what the amen is (especialy junglists with amen shirts left and right.)

that's why are shows are limited to an attendance from 15-300 (if you are lucky)

claiming that an amen can beef up a party is fucking retarded. are you guys forgetting that there is alot of breakcore that don't even use breaks?

prolly because most of the mindset for breakcore i have noticed by fellow unsigned producers has been limited to just mashups with gabber kicks and the amen break.

it's fucking 2008 dude, that's more than ten years since niggas started putting gabber kicks to break.

for gad sakes the gabber kicks have evolved more then the fucking break?

why is that?

I genuinely have no idea what you're saying here. And calling people retarded isn't playing nice.

But breakcore without breaks? Haha, ok. There's a hint in the name :)

Dude, that is exactly the point I am making about the amen. People use it because it has such a distinctive timbre to it. I think to a bunch of people it is an intrinsic part various styles of music. I recently got hold of copies of old rave compilations I had when I was a kid. I remember there were some tunes I liked the sound of more than others. 13 years later I listened back to it. The tracks I liked were the ones with fuck off chunky amens. When I write tunes I want to make stuff that for me has the same kind of feeling as old mike slammer and red alert stuff. The only way to do it is to stick a fuck off amen on the track. The internet is full of shit amen + gabba kick shitcore. GET OVER IT AND DON'T LISTEN TO IT!
I hate mindless breakcore by numbers shit as much as the next man but to my ears there is nothing better than a well processed and well sequenced Amen.
