Good tutorials for Breaks for FL?

Postby Hebenon Vial » Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:26 pm

I'm looking to make some breaks for Fruity Loops, but I'm kind of deprived with knowledge of the program. Any good tutorials to get me on my feet, or am I gonna have to just wing it?

There's also a part two in the related videos.

That's a wicked tutorial! Taught me loads of new tricks.

Thing is, there's so many ways to make breaks in Fruity Loops, you kinda have to find your own way. Watch the video, learn how to use the slicer and experiment. It's surprisingly easy!

Yeah, I thought the strum thing was a really good idea.

I doubt I'll ever use it, but it's cool. :)

i like to make me own breaks from different breaks combined but if you wanna get started this is how i go about it.

load a break in the fruity slicer fit to the tempo.

breaks very, some times you get breaks that are 8 beats 32 or even 9-12 beats.

modify yer break (layer, distort, eq etc. . . . )

bounce it to wav.

open yer fav wav editor then chop yer break to single shots.

load yer single shots into the sequencer.

i like to load it like this

[kick] . [][][][][][][][]

[snare] . [][][][][][][][]

[fill] . [][][][][][][][]

then have at it.

if you are looking for a certain style of how to make breaks, just keep on fucking about in fruity.

it's fun discovering new shit man.

ya learn something new everytime you fuck with fruity.

Thanks a bunch. :)
I'm not so sure where to find all of the samples of breaks in FL, so I'm just gonna have to dig around, I suppose. Unless it's right in my face and I'm not noticing. =P
But I will just mess around a bunch and see what I find.

Some Rad Tricks Are.
Having Two Slicers With The Same Beat With One Time Stretched Half As Slow So Instead Of Your Kick Usually Lasting Half A Beat It Can Last A Whole Beat Instead. (Great For Stop/Start Techniques)

Layering Kicks/Snare Hits
I Prefer To Do That In Granulizer And I Never Use The Regular Sampler Because I Figure Even If I Don't Need Granulization I Might Need It Later.

Adding A Ride Or Hat Very Subtly
I Prefer Rides Because When I Do Add Them I Use Them At A Low Level And The Chick Of A Hihat Makes It Easier To Distinguish.

I Hope I Didn't Help Any Of You With My Lack Of Detail.

Quick question about loading samples.
I found a bunch of Break samples under Scores in FL, and they come up with the beats, but there's no sound when I play them. Am I doing something wrong? Does it have to be put in a certain channel to work, or am I just stupid?

I don't know if your stupid, but can you elaborate on your problem?,

Just let FL read your samples, and just open them in a new slicer channel.

Maybe you just replaced the sample that was there.

I think youve just got the patterns there. is there any audio when you click on them in the browser?

try checking in "Image-Line\FL Studio 8\Data\Patches\Packs\Loops\Drum Loops"

Template for FL Studio

this is what you get:

- A bassline frequency split into low, middle, high frequencies.
- Kick and Bass Sidechain already set up.
- 5 Fruity Slicer Slots for sliced beats
- 2 sampler slots for each snares, kicks, hats, and other percussion.
- 10 slots for your VSTi Synths of Choice.
- 10 slots for your Audio Clips.
- each of these (bass, Drums, Synths, Clips) are already routed to their own FX channels.
- Only the 4 blue FX channels with label "OUT" (6,23,34,45) are directly going to the master channel, this is keeping things clean. Each of these channels has a limiter on them, to prevent distortion.
- Labeled patterns already set up in the playlist. There are several patterns for your drums, your bass, synthlines, and modulation.
- There are 4 send channels, one for reverb, one for beat synced delay, one for stereo ambience delay, one for modulation.
- There are no instruments, no samples, no clips already loaded. :p

i read that thread also but i don't think this guy is in need of a template that he prolly wouldn't know what to do with.

the ideal concept in this thread was to get info on how to compose with breaks.

i have a shit ton of ways to compose of breaks but i wouldn't just be like "yo here is how i do it to the T"

the best way is for this dude is to read what he needs to do and discover how he is gonna go about making breaks.

shit is easy man, just avoid the amen break =D!

As I said at the top "FL users might be interested in this thread"

It wasnt a response to the original question, I was merely sharing a pretty handy template with the other FL users in the thread.
Not only does it help keep things tidier and more organised, but Im sure the split-bass and the sidechain are probably new to a few people here (not nescessarily the concept but putting it into practice) so I hope some people benefit from it.

Anyone who doesnt need it can scroll on by and ignore it.
