Clean Break?
Hi Guys
I've been working on my break for the last week, got the pattern perfect and then started working on EQing and levels.
I've now run into a problem, I ended up with a messy sound. I don't know if there's too much high end or what but I'm having trouble splitting up the frequencies.
I'm using Reason 4, utilising the NN-XT to sample an amen break and a heavy metal break seperately and they play the same pattern together.
Should I get a cleaner break to start with or turn down the sustain on NN-XT? Or start from scratch one step at a time?

Probably turn down the sustain like you said.
I have no clue how NN-XT works, but if you can adjust the decay of each slice, that'd probably help too.
If it's a reaaaalllly dirty beat though, probably just find another. Is it isolated (just the drums) or is there guitar/bass/etc playing over the top of it?

The problem is when putting the breaks on top of each other it gets very messy. I've lined up the kick snares and hats/toms of both breaks.
I think i might have sorted it though.. I've played with the decay/sustain to shorten the hits. And i've layer a punchier kick and snare on top.

um, for the hell of it..
im using the amen for the high end and the metal break for the cymbals and toms.. should i not do that?

No, you totally should layer breaks.
Definitely gives a denser sound, but like you're having trouble with, the trick is getting everything EQ'ed and compressed correctly so it sounds good.
