I don't like headphones at all, i think that is indeed a personal preference.
I already have impaired hearing because i listen to music on the way too school, so headphones no thanks,
Plus in my past i made good tracks too:

Since you are here I guess you are interested in breakcore... well, Renoise is very flexible, I consider it as a weapon of choice for that kind of music.
The demo can do about 99.9% of what the paid version can.. it worth a try.
www.renoise.com
oh and the renoise liscence costs like 80$US and it's good for 10 versions of the software.
I too use renoise and say it's definitely worth checking. Personally I work with purely freeware with it and there is a lot of wicked synths and effects for free if you look. Have to admit I haven't actually made anything for ages now though!
Also worth checking out EnergyXT. Budget, powerful sequencer.
Buzz is also very powerful and free but the project died and it hasn't been updated for many years (although I hear a rumour of it's revival.)

I downloaded it to give it a quick play yesterday but it confused me. Is it a pure clone, so I should use the Buzz manuals, as there doesn't seem to be any for Buze?
It's also got a buggy audio engine which doesn't release my card for Winamp when I close it
