Breakcore Beats in FL8
Just a quick question.
Maybe today, I#m trying to hard. The beats are just not happening. Out of interest, when making Breakcore in FL, do any users initially start @ the tracks designated temp (ie:300bpm etc) or just make a beat @ stock (140) and the speed it up?
Just curious.
One thing that I did find was useful, it to load a beat into the slicer, chop it and edit. Then play both the original beat you have made the chopped ontop of eachother - can get some sweet sounds also if you alter the pitch of one or the other. Make sense?
If anyone has any hints for making breaks/beats from single hits in FL please let me know. Not been able to find much on the Net.

i usually just set the tempo to to whatever speed i want the song to be and fuck around for awhile, get a good beat going with a small collection of hits and then work on tweaking the effects on the hits, those will be the core of the drum section. then i'll clone the hits and either shorten them, reverb them or whatever else to get some variation. sometimes just a quieter ghost clone hit, which you only really need if you dont wanna lover the velocity when you need a ghost. then i'll add some more hits and crap and by then i have a big ass kit. i usually save the hihats for when i have most of the drums for that song worked out, since it cuts the flow of the track down it forces me to really work out the drums to flow better. then when i add the hats... it sounds even rollier. the thing about single hits is they sound more mechanical than chopped up breaks cause theyre missing all the background echo from the rest of the kit, so you may want to still chop up a break and throw it over.
i start programming the beats when my kit is in it's fetal stage, so i'll either have a lead in to the full kit, or i'll chop off the beginning and divide into sections for a variation or two somewhere. not sure if that helps at all.
also i don't use 8, i use 4. they took out the stretch to fit function from 5 on so it causes a lot of bullshit inconveniences for me. and prevents me from making my popcorn claps.

the best part about producing is setting your own limits and crossing them.

@cuttingagent: Not sure what problems you're having or what a "popcorn clap" is (but it sounds nice), but FL7 does include a stretch feature, for sampler channels anyway. Under "Time Stretching" on the SMP tab, if you right click the TIME knob, the context menu offers the choice to stretch to 1 beat, 2 beats, 1 pattern, 2 patterns, or 4 patterns.
Just clearing that up. Keep on rockin with what you rockin!
