The Capsicum/Bell peppers and chilli thread!

Postby djtheblade » Wed Jun 10, 2009 4:50 pm

Ok so I need some advice, we've got very limited pot space and pretty no garden (apartment i'm afraid). We've got our peppers and chillis bunged in to big-ish pots (40-50 cm circumference). They're getting to be nearly a foot tall now though and the pots are really starting to look crowded, we've already had a batch of tightly packed broccoli in the same size pots fail and die on us, and i'm worried that these various peppers will also start to suffer from root combat. What are the likelihood that these bad boys will survive and provide some crop do you guys suppose? I could take pictures if really necessary.

I'm no expert but I know one thing: herbs don't grow indoors very well. The wife tried growing some mint, parsley, etc. in our apartment and they all died.

As for your peppers, broccoli and what not, well, I'm not sure.

I've got my jalapeno's growing in a similar big pot, but mines outside and growing right on up. I also have basil, mint, rosemary, cilantro growing in similar pots and all are doing nicely cept the rosemary. I think the rosemary might be out of season.

This might answer some of your questions

I think the dwarf chilli plants are the best when it comes down to limited space. These little plants are excellent for windowsills and small greenhouses and can yield supprisingly well.

The chilli plant can be difficult to germinate from seed, so if your starting out its best to buy a small plant or two to grow to maturity. Pruine any excesively large or damaged leaves as its growing so as to direct nutrients into key areas, to make the plant bushier and high yielding.

Heres a good site as well:

update!

Today I had tie my Jalepeno plant to a stick because it got so tall and started to fall over with the breezes of the wind. I'm also spotting several lil peppers growing already! I think I may goto a local green house and see about getting another chilli to grow. I was thinking habanero any other suggestions?
