usually the best crash sounds arent close-miked stock cymbal sounds you get in drum machines. the best shit comes from drum breaks (or recorded music) where there is a kick-cymbal hit. usually when you program drums, you want to have a kick where a cymbal is anyway, so having the kick just adds extra punch. if you really just want just a crash cymbal sound, then take a mobile recording device (you can get one at radioshack for like 10 bucks) and go to guitar center and record yourself smashing every cymbal in there. make sure you let the thing ring out to the very end. cymbals sound best when you put the microphone above and off center.
shit im gonna go do this tomorrow.
