to add, if you want to know where dubstep is headed in the US, look at what happened to punk. it started as a small core scene in england, then america picked up on it and put their spin on it. the small scene erupted and became a whole bunch of scenes all around america.
the shitty thing that happened is people got way too fuckin possessive of the music, to the point where it stopped becoming about music and all about who did what first and who does what better and what the "real music is"
fuck all that shit. good music is good music. im not gonna hate on your chilled out british dubstep, cause i know that its just not my scene. my shit is the dubstep with the meanest wobbles and robot sounds, whats wrong with that? you dont like servo motors in your two step? you like smooth sine waves instead of hairy ones? thats fine for you, just realize that theres enough people out there that like it to make it important, and the people making dubstep outside of western europe might actually have some fresh ears for something you guys are already getting callous to.

except dubstep is more danceable
I really don't think it is, all the Dubstep ket heads might bounce around a bit (providing they haven't already been thrown out of the club for collapsing and dribbling on the floor) but the hard drum and bass sets always get the real party people going.
I don't think this is simply about first wave brit snobs getting all arsey when something new comes out, and I don't think as Breakcore fans (haters) we've got to automatically like any development in a genre that adds additional power or complexicity. There are plenty of electronic genres that are changing but the loyalists aren't bitching about the new forms all the while, look at the progression in Drum and Bass for example.
On a related note I think the mainstream Dutch hardcore is changing for the worst on the whole, but there's no mass revolt with that as witnessed in Dubstep. It's something unique to dubstep, and I think it lies in the former fan base who haven't so much actively rejected it, they've just graduated from their shitty red brick polytechnics with their film studies degrees and now they're in the real world they don't have time for trendy clothes and trucker caps any more. There were strong local scenes which were overshadowed by the student and drug using demographic. Also similarly with Breakcore the rise of the bedroom producer has saturated the internet and obscured the direction and evolution of the genre, I aint gonna start blaming Joe Bloggs on his laptop, fuck it we've all made bedroom music, it's just one piece to a much greater puzzle.

okay first of all, harder does not mean better. i like hard and extreme music, but that does not excuse poorly produced music! which brings us to the next point: yes, i am very sorry but for example datsik & excision's "swagga" IS poorly produced. it's solid and the wobbles are mental, but listen to the drums man! listen. you hear that? that's fucking cheap! lets make this more simple:
1. with each year of it's existence, dubsteps production got better and better, producers got more inventive and skilled. new ideas popped up, all that stuff.
2. until pinch or loefah (dont quite remember who was first) came up with that halfstep (which was really groundbreaking back then) the drums were mostly complex and had that garage-y groove, hence the name dubSTEP. shuffle, syncopation and groove. lots of drums.
3. bass and space. music you can get lost in, music that wraps itself around you and won't let you go. with all those spatial effects like reverb, delays and panning you have a really 3-dimensional sound, and the extremely deep bass gives it a bodily experience you have in no other music.
4. i can only repeat: progression, invention, direction. it's been a really long way from el-b influenced dark garage to scuba's maximalist minimal-tech or toastys breakstep ruffage, but it's been a way walked with big steps forward. you always had some new trends and directions upcoming and each one of them was exciting and unknown territory, you never really knew where the genre would be heading in the next few months. you had ethnical influences, reggae-dystopism, rapidfire-grime-mc'ing, wonky, ambience-laden-technodub, breakstep, the nasty gnarly wobblestuff... im sure i forgot a lot of things i didnt notice back then!
when the halfstep-wobble-caspa/rusko/reso/n-type/whatever stuff came up it slowly started getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger, but at the same time the production became less and less about dubsteps signature elements and more centered on the wobble and heavy slow beats. but of course figuring out how to use a lfo, let alone creating a loopable halfstep-beat out of really punchy samples ain't that hard.
oh, and thats also important: i don't care where the music comes from. its not about american or british dubstep, there is awesome us-dubstep (starkey or the subdivision for example) and i HATE caspa, rusko and the likes.

the majority of it is just pure wank. all the producers are just going for the exact same sound coz they know it works on the dancefloor.
of course there are exceptions...there are some real classy producers like king cannibal and ital-tek etc
but those really are the exceptions. its ridiculous now, just type "dubstep remix" into youtube and you will find 10000000000s of shit remixes of shit pop tunes, followed by loads of comments left by little twats going "AHH SIKK TUNE MATE" "SIK BRUV WERE CAN I DOWNLOAD DIS TUNE"
dubstep is basically the only genre getting any attention at the minute. I always see flyers saying things like "room 1- dubstep/dnb/jungle... room 2-dubstep/hip hop/breaks... room 3-dubstep/reggae/dub" etc
it was only a matter of time before MOS got hold of it..tbh im surprised it took this long

Haha, yeah like I said previously, everyones jumping on it aswell because it's an easy way to get playing in clubs.

I definatly prefer the Excision/ datsik style to the older minimal stuff. The fact that it has a more aressive feel apeals to me. If i wanna hear something nice and well produced id be more likely to stick on a bit of Fedayi Pacha( fuckin best music to smoke a joint to) something more dub than dubstep!
