Postby demnevanni » Tue Dec 21, 2010 5:09 pm

Side-chaning is a technique not an effect. If you understand this then you can initially side-chain anything to anything if you have the tools to do so. As it is just taking the signal from one source and using it to control another.

In the case of side-chaining with reverb, more specifically with a kick you would go about this by linking the kick's side-chain from it's compressor to the reverb amount. You would do this so that reverb is utilized on the tail of the kick and not on the peak of the kick (the punch and stab - the part you want clean and unreverberated)

It's common practice in commercial dance music to side-chain a kick's compressor to a synth's reverb in and out of breakdowns so that the reverb is present but not overwhelming the drums when they hit hits.

Much like you would side-chain a Bassline to a Kick to dunk the out the overwhelming frequencies of the bass while the kick is dominant.

Go crazy and experiment with it - use muted kicks as a signal to control the amount of the reverb on a synth for some mad fluctuating reverb effects. Use a muted break instead of a kick for rhythmic reverb! etc etc
