Releasing an album with copyrighted samples?

Postby Greezus » Sun Dec 25, 2011 3:43 am

So let's say I have an album that uses a ton of samples that are copyrighted; Family Guy samples, South Park samples, movie samples, etcetera.

I'm gunna assume that purchasing the licence to use every sample I use in the album would cost me a shit ton of money; I mean, getting permission from Comedy Central to use a sample from a South Park episode? I'd assume that that'd be like at least a hundred dollars or some shit.

I'd also guess that the shorter the sample, the less money I'd wind up paying, but that could be wishful thinking, as I have absolutely no idea about this shit. (Now that I think about it, Droon released Cripplefight, and Ladyscraper made a remix, so maybe Ladyscraper could talk about this, he's on the board.)

So, has anyone here had issues with this sorta thing? Ever released an album that had samples, and you wound up with Large Company Incorporated complaining at your door/email box/whatever?

first of all, are they gonna find out about it? it's breakcore! second, if you wanna do it the legal way, look up some books on copyright. thirdly, mangle the fuck out of the samples so they aren't eeasily recognised and you won't be causing as much trouble for yourself.

I'm no expert

it is very unlikely many big companies would pursue you unless your profits or current financial status promise more returns than efforts it takes on their part. Remember, they still have to pay legal fees to deal with you and if youre poor and hopeless no manner of lawsuit will ever even get them their legal fees back. I think the biggest problem you may have to work with is having your videos kicked off youtube or something. I say never ever worry about copyrights; you may be doing something better on the political spectrum from these sorts of actions anyway :)

Getting buttfucked in jail is very breakcore. So is working a shitty job for the next 13 years to pay off your fines is very breakcore too. So that means you have to. Make sure at your hearing, you wear an ihatebreakcore dot com shirt, and you have to have a look on your face that says, " im too important to be bothered with all this, but i made a kick-ass track that got 75 plays"

If you're not selling thousands and thousands of records, don't worry! Lawyers will only pursue shit that'll make them money.

Also the artists and record company's will probably listen top your "remix" and immediately sign you to their label.
