ok you'll get used to it pretty quickly, i promise.

after a while you'll know that the first snare in a break will be 0940, and that kind of stuff.
also fuck around with 0E0X does, and 0B00.

I use Renoise 3.0 right now and I usually do break chopping manually with the Sxx (or 9xx depending on your preference) command. I usually crank my LPB up to 12 so I can do triplets and drills easily.
For a usual 1 bar loop (assuming 4 lpb at 4/4 timing with 16 lines per bar), I usually write them like so...

Example Amen Break (Labelled hits of interest)

c-4 s00 - Kick
c-4 s10
c-4 s20 - Kick
c-4 s30
c-4 s40 - Snare
c-4 s50
c-4 s60
c-4 s70 - Snare (ghost)
c-4 s80
c-4 s90 - Snare (ghost)
c-4 sA0 - Kick (ghost)
c-4 sB0 - Kick (ghost)
c-4 sC0 - Snare
c-4 sD0
c-4 sE0
c-4 sF0 - Snare (ghost)

From here, you can usually go in and do some chops to find your particular beats of choice. I personally don't like the *set pitch to lines* thing because I'm not a huge fan of chipmunk drums that happens in the 180+ bpm range. Usually, I'll just pitch my drums up 3-4 semitones on most breaks to keep the shuffle in time. Play around with it.

As for getting your gabba kicks and stuff to work on your breaks, try to experiment with odd time signatures or slightly faster bpms and then sampling the kicks and breaks together to make a new sample. Experiment with the Oxx command to add decay to your drum hits (this helps out if you are compressing or gating your breaks to keep them from sounding too grindy and fucking up your mix) and Rxx and Bxx commands for more manipulations in your breaks.

Remember, the more you can do without the use of insert fx or plugins, the better control you will have over your breaks. I personally only use the Renoise native fx just because they are pretty lightweight and can be automated well within my patterns.
