Woa so many subgenres

Postby JBL » Mon Mar 17, 2008 11:13 am

While I've been uploading my songs I've noticed a large category of very specific subgenres and I realised that I didn't know what most of them where all about... So I'm wondering.. could it be possible for you guys (or girls) to make a good list of them? A descriptive list that would give a good idea of how the genre feels (violent, smooth, atmospherical, etc), its speed, is it fast? is it slow? a bpm range maybe??? and the most common elements that we can find in most of the songs of the genre.. (and maybe the stuff that we won't even get in that genre (I mean, those who worth mensioning, useless to say that the genre industrial won't have a recorder solo right in the middle of the track..)

Wouldn't it be a good idea?

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much. Most of them are invented by bored mixmag journalists and the like.

there are descriptions of these sub "genres" here:

Disappointing, as I was about to write my own snobby yet witty deconstructive descriptions for them all.

Wikipedia has a very good electronic music section which explains most of it.

People who make up genres are fucking ghey. If I had my way (which is looking increasingly inevitable), there would only be two genres: electronic and acoustic.

I knew some smartarse would say that, but I didn't bargain on so soon.

No, there is no such thing as mixing electronic and acoustic instruments. That's the final word.

*hi-five*

...and I'm sure you'll agree, everyone, that this is the end of the discussion on genres.

i love sub and micro genres but its silly calling a genre a different name because of its mood, like JBL said, "(violent, smooth, atmospherical, etc)" thats moods, not reasons for splitter new sub genres.

It's good so long as it's a bit tongue in cheek or is a well defined term. Stuff like IDM is cack I think, because it implies that anything which isn't IDM is automatically unintelligent.

Speedcore for example, makes sense (sort of). Shitcore and Analcore and other retarded variants of noise, don't.

who here classes Techno as the WHOLE genre of electronic music or do they class it as its own type of electronic music?
