I Hate Breakcore

First off, i know nothing of the world of breakcore outside of my turntables. All i do is spin it , and occasionaly make feeble attempts at producing it on shitty programs.

What i'm interested in, is performing live. Not sitting behind a laptop in front of a crowd and clicking the mouse. But using equipment, and being able to manipulate my sound live. My problem is, i don't know where to start. ive watched videos of like aaron spectre and the vsnares dude. Doing there thing, but they seem to be using differnt stuff. Aarons got his 2 midi controllers and some other audio controller thing. and a laptop. and does his shit. But i dont know what i should be going after or how i would even use it.

Can someone lay down the law for me? or link me to some threads that will explain it all. anything really.

Isn't that basically just a software program? How do i utilize hardware with that? Like i said. I want to perform, not sit behind a laptop the whole time.

Ok, it depends what you want to do. You can, if you want, do it completely with hardware. Drum machines, synths, etc. For example, I got myself a Kaossilator today which could easily be implemented into some kind of live set. If so, it's Ableton you need. Once of get it, there are multiple options of how you want to go ahead with your live set. You could do what Hoonboy does in the video above and play existing tunes but mash them up with other breaks and samples on the fly or you could go the Tim Exile route and do everything yourself. Either way, you are most likely to be stuck behind a laptop for most of your performance but I don't see why this should be a problem. The UK laptop battles for example only allow one piece of midi hardware and yet I've seen some wicked improv sets there. If you are desperate to have a more active live performance then you can still do so with Ableton or the software of your choosing. Thanks man. And out of those options you gave me i'd say i'd be a bit more interested in what hoonboy does. But i'm not exactly sure how original that is. Or if he's really adding much to the track. Rather than just popping in a few samples here and there.

maybe use a standard midi controller with ableton and then run it all through something like a KP3. You'll come up with something fucking awesome for live performance. Like a combination of those two videos you posted.

The thing with live performance is it can be as original as you want it to be. I used Hoonboy as my example because I had him down to do a live session on this radio show I do with Red Sparowe and so saw what he does up close. His stuff is more of a DJ/live show hybrid in that he essentially just DJs breakcore but he uses his own breaks, effects and the like to add something more to his live show. However, I've seen him do some really original remixes like a raggacore mashup of Don't Mug Yourself by the Streets so you can go as far as you like with this sort of thing.

The one thing you will need, as others have pointed out, is a midi controller. I've heard good things about the Trigger Finger that the kid used in the second video but I think it's best to get a midi keyboard instead for your first controller. If you get one with a decent amount of knobs and maybe a fader or two then it will be more than adequate for a live set, plus you can use it to write your own tunes if you so wish.

The interesting aspect of performing electronic music is that what is played is not the sounds themselves but rather the contextualization of the sounds: their order, their affect, their relationships, etc...

i think you could pre-make the beats of your whole set in an audio file, hook it up to a korg kaoss pad and other effects (you could use guitar hardware effects like distortion, flanger etc.. i do it, sometimes)
and play your fx and synts life in like Fruity loops or some other program

Well you could try to program an usb controller or midi keyboard with your desired music program. I bought a midi controller weeks ago but it takes a huge amount of time learning how to program the damn thing some things are just easier to do with a mouse. Just look into it before buying, its a fact you cant just hook up your equipment and play with it, which is sad coz it limits the fun in these things.
