most of you kids know i dislike the abuse of this very break, some people can get away with it because they are well composed drum editors and have great production skills like

Venetian Snares, [ ]pusher, Flashbulb, Techitch and Evol Intenet etc.. .

it took me a while to realize that the amen break is not only a sample but an element to music making like the 303 is to acid and 909 is to hardcore and the 808 is to hip hop.

but god fucking damn, all those synths are tools for sequencing.

imagine making a song with the same sample over and over and never doing anything innovative with it. . . . that's the amen break for you.

the snare sounds like a fucking block of wood being dropped.

i'm over people using the amen snare like a xylophone.

amen abuse to me is just lazy,


i hear a song with the amen break and i automatically dismiss it.

like for instance going to hear some ones myspace profile and they have the amen break in every track


most people don't know how to process this break or just use an already processed amen that was prolly sampled off a dylan track.

one tip if yer gonna go about processing the amen break . .. . . MONO!!!!

anyways, there are a shit ton of breaks out there.

for me processing them chopping them up and layering them is the best part about making a song, choosing yer own break out of a collection of thousands of breaks is the fun part.

i think the amen is a crutch.

I haven't found a break with the versatility and energy of the amen. The snare sound is proper nice, it has such a warm tone which makes it pitchable. I use it a lot. It's also very consistently performed and recorded so it sounds fine when using slices together from different parts of the break.

It is overused though. I wish a lot of people would do more with it than just loop it and play it back from offsets etc. *yawn*.

Though I will say this: there's only one thing worse than an amen evangelist; an anti-amen evangelist.

i thought about sampling that dude but then would require me using the amen break.

in fact i just recalled recently that i did use the amen break for a tribute track to a friend who had passed away.

he would have made fun of me for using it so i threw it in there.

the amen break is cool cause it got this particular feel of speedness even at not to fast bpm. I don't know why perhaps cause being unquantized and becuase of the cymbal

anyway it's not a easy to use break because obvisouly of the cymbal... if you speed it up to much it end sounding like a chainsaw and if you had too much distorsion it's just mayhem

If you want to use it anyway (mainly perhaps for the melodic snare roll thing) try to layer it with 909, this way it sound pretty beefy and keep it raw and melodic stuff
Also try to search TC AMEN on dogsonacid.com it's probably the most chimical and phatt amen

There's nothing wrong with the Amen. Bit lazy if you only use it without exploring the alternatives but if someone is lazy, it will show up in their music.
