haha yeah totally man!
You ever hear the Streets of Rage music? It was on the Megadrive around 1993 or so. That console had a pretty crap sound chip, but *man*! Those guys squeezed every last drop out of it - and it was all influenced by the UK rave and dance scene at the time. The tunes still stand up, they sound fucking awesome!
As for chiptunes... hmm, I find it kinda weird and gimmicky. I think the idea of deliberately retarding your scope when it comes to creating something is a bit strange. Though I've not heard many chiptunes tbh.

Streets of rage 1 and 2 are probably my 2 fav sound tracks. I listen to those tunes all the time. Awesome games too. There is also a sound test so you can preview all the music and sound effects. I wish someone would do a MIDI NES type thing for the megadrive. I think its a yamaha FM chip.

yeah, it has two sound chips. You can extract all the individual song instruments and sequence for a track using an emulator, by turning the sound channels on/off. doing this made me realise how impressive the compositions are, they use so many cool tricks to get it sound like that. i made a streets of rage megamix a while ago but lost it

Hahaha, lately I've been making acid house remixs of megadrive games when I'm bored and not in the mood to make something heavy and spakky, so far I've done the first and boss levels of streets of rage and a few from revenge of shinobi and the main theme music to chuck rock cos its awesome as fuck!
Ecco the dolphin had an awesome soundtrack too on the softer side of things.

Crazy, funky, junky hat.

We've been there,
We've done that,
We see right through your funky hat!

\((( "D )))/ Yay clouds! ☁ ☁ ☁ ☁ ☁
I'm working on some chiptunes, not exactly breakcore though.
I've connected and synced 2 Gameboys, 1 Atari st 1040 and a c64.
Heres a sample with some of the tunes I'm working on:
http://zkoa.glitchbeat.com/davedisrupto ... adness.mp3
(the last one is heavely distorted)
And btw dj_ninja_love_mistake, crystal castles didn't put any atari chip in a keyboard, they've just sampled some already existing chiptunetracks.

It's alright, i like it when it's mixed with breakcore but with taste. Not like all over the place.
