tape loop, broken noise, squirelly dissonant

Postby zaaddonor » Sun Dec 14, 2008 4:32 am

I'm looking for music which merely consists of tape loops, squirrely layers and/or broken noise samples looping
Not necessarily harsh noise, but rather samples which are "mangled" or just made "dissonant" or "squirrely"
Like this example:
http://www.archive.org/download/kustota ... 0_64kb.mp3

I also really like it when the samples are being stretched (made long) or "frozen" (like a computer crash) in an unpredictable manner

I have found some mp3's which are made up of looping breaks and splittery sequences, but not basic enough.
Some hyperdriver songs come close though.
But I want more!
I'm having trouble defining the right keywords to find this style

Anybody have some suggestions by name which I could check?

uh, i don't know how you can get that freeze sound with actual tape... but if you're looking for really weird tape music there's a few pages at ubuweb you may want to browse

phonostatic series archive

tellus tape series

also maybe check out some of the tape-beatles/public works stuff there.

not all of it sounds like the mp3 you linked, but some of it does. hope this helps.

also, blanketship - he's part digital, so he "freezes" stuff occasionally

Sounds like someone playing with tape delays of various loops. There are some plugins that do this type of stuff and there is a way to do it in ableton(which I forget at the moment)

As for the "freeze" and "stretch" sound I like doing that by hand now days when I multi-sample stuff. Give me a .wav and I'll sit there happy like a lil cat just cut and pasting till my hearts content....or my ears start throbbing.

I don't really follow this type of music that much, but I give a second recommendation to the stuff on Brainwash.com.

Also check out Richard Devine since he does some stuff that you may like. He's from here and I've seen him do all sorts of crazyness with gear/software. When he's at his most experimental or ambient he sounds like Computers waging war on the inside, logging into the ethernet and then combating with viruses....all with a better soundscape.

Richard is a really nice guy, I enjoy talking to him. Dude knows a lot and has the hookup for software and gear. I'll be checking videos/reviews of new gear and BAM he'll be on the demo videos already! I have some pics of his ableton setup from a meeting and I bout shit when I seen all the samples he had running.

I also have pics of him on rollerskates hahahaha!
