I think that the price of many of these applications keep many people from having tools to create. So in other words: pirate away :P

I think supporting artists is far more important.

Software companies aren't going to go out of business due to a handful of rebel scum pirates.

The artists will suffer big time though through pirating their material. Especially in a genre like the one we all hate here.

Also, open source software is going to get better and better as time goes on, maybe even forcing the bigger software companies to lower their prices. So, if you have to get by jacking a prog here or there, in not much more time, you'll be able to get some pretty good shit for free with no bullshit paranoia.

I don't know, just some thoughts.

I think a more worthwhile study would be the ratio of people who bought their software doing more worthwhile music work and for longer periods. As for people who pirated it, putting out some quick put together tunes, then just quit making music altogether.

I've always thought about this.

Anything you spend your hard earned money on, and anything that comes from it, seems to have more value. Seem to be able to pull more from.

Bullshit hardwired psychological quirks of humanity!!! So annoying.

i think its completely dependant on how the software will be used, if youre planning on making some actual professional tunes and sell em quite a bit, you should be buying the software youre using, but for people who will probably never professionally record and sell a record of their own, the software companies will not lose out because of it, most that are not pro will never end up purchasin a 600 dollar program anyway

i pay for software i find innovative and useful. i realize that for the people coding this stuff it's more often than not a labor of love and a vision to make something that wasn't there before. you know, like how you might feel about your music? they're computer music geeks, too. so i like to support them. but... charging for a synth you made in synthedit, a patch you made in reaktor, devices you racked in Ableton, etc. is really LAME. those people and companies should be laughed off the face of this earth.
