ableton's video editing is just used for syncing video and sound. I've personally never used it, but I know there are other programs way better for doing that stuff. Azop and them do some nice visuals with their live shows, you should check his thread in one of the other sections for samples.

Adobe's after effects can help you edit video and apply effects and stuff. It's designed for post production sort of work, but is cool because you can composite different pieces of video together in layers. You can use adobe premiere or final cut to do video editing. There are a lot of freeware avi trimmers and mpeg to avi converters. Personally, for my VJ work I just convert everything to avi and use an avi trimmer to chop what I need up into video loops to be used live through different pieces of vj software. I mostly use Visual Jockey, which is freeware or Arkaos. I hear Resolume is really dope but I haven't tried working with it yet. VVVV is like a programming environment that lets you build filters and put together your own sort of video stuff from scratch, but it's pretty hard to learn.

It all depends on what you want to do. For what I do, I use lots of different software. Sometimes I work with looped avi stuff, or sometimes with longer sequences, sometimes I make animations in other programs and add effects to them not even using any video clips. Sometimes i splice together sequences of video into strings for convenience too, but most of my editing is pretty raw. Like I said, i do most of my work in vj software, which you can control using MIDI. It's kind of like having knobs and sliders on an acid trip. And a video mixer with two laptops king shit.

But I imagine you'd want to chop video to beats no? Then you can use something like premiere or final cut. I've used premiere a bit, but I haven't for a while since I've been working mostly with avi, which is quick and easy to edit with free software. I used to make pre-rendered stuff using premiere and after effects.

Someone was talking about the fact that there should be a tracker-like video editor somewhere else on this forum. I hope a programmer figures that out and builds it one day, although I'm not sure how many people would actually buy it.
