How the hell do you play a breakcore set? how the hell do you mix breakcore? so much of it doesn't have a intro bit or outro bit which you can line them up with?!!

HOW?
by god HOW?

if you are a good dj, you don't need intros and outros. its possible.

Listen to some mixes with the tracklist in front of you and see how the pros do it. Trippmatic's mix on Peace Off is a good place to start as it's free AND it has Dr Bastardo - Cease and Desist which makes it great.

i cant dj, this is what i do when i can get at some decks:

feed both decks through a big muff distortion pedal and crossfade the fuck out of any tune you can get your hands on. slow down and spped up without discrimation, scratch with your errection and headbang.

i have a vynal by patrick swayze called shes like the wind. when the crowd realise im shit, i put that on and all is forgiven.

Some of the better breakcore DJs I have found do not limit themselves to a two deck + mixer setup, rather they use the aformentioned along with midi controler(s) and a laptop. This allows them to not only mix the tracks, but drop in their own samples and loops, which makes for a very interesting final product and a very exciting live performance.

One such DJ who really opened me up to breakcore was Aaron Spectre. "Life We Promote" is a very good set by him and you can download it from his site (aaronspectre.com) if you care enough to give it a listen.

If you're spining an experiemental genre, shouldn't you as the DJ be experimental in your mixing as well?

Blastopore has a very good point. In fact, a lot breakcore DJs don't use decks at all, choosing to take it all straight from their laptop. Out of everyone I saw at Glade this year, I think only the Gabba DJs (Producer and Dolphin & Teknoist) used decks. Some people like Tim Exile, Droon and Ceephax Acid Crew don't even bother DJing in the conventional sense at all, prefering to mashup their tracks live. Droon for example stuck a keyboard-turned-midi-controller to a cardboard cutout of a guitar and used that to kick in his samples and breaks, even if his set wasn't up to much.

And yes, that Aaron Spectre set is definitely worth a listen.

Ah yes Droon, never seen him live, but I have heard about his "keytar."

Mashup mixing opens the door to limitless possibilities. My only issue with a full laptop setup is that it's not very exciting for the DJ or the crowd in my opinion. Enter midi controls and Soundplant. 8)

.

to me it is different than mixing a bunch of deathchant type stuff...with breakcore you really want to know the tracks before you start.

i typically start with a pile of tracks and listen to them over and over until i get to a point where i start to see where they can be tied together.

not for me, i never listen to drum and bass before i mix it...shit with most of the stuff i play i only preview it briefly before playing it...but i have been djing for almost 20 years now.
