Metal is the first genre of music I really devoted a lot of time, energy and MONEY into. It changed who I was as a person, and not always, necessarily, for the better.

Anyways, my exclusive listening to emperor days are over. However, I think the metal scene is still very hoppin. If I listen now, I tend to go for more atmospheric black metal and brutal death metal.

Favorite bands of the genre: Gorguts, Demilich, Lykathea Aflame, Meshuggah, Peste Noire, Devourment, Negura Bunget, Black Sabbath, etc. etc.

Most of those bands are pretty fun.
I'm more into the funeral doom scene.
It's not all "look at me, I can play fast and annoyingly, I have the 80s highschool attitude".
It's more of a relaxed type of music with existential feelings to it, sometimes incorporating Dark Ambient music to bring in a feeling of dread.
Slower, more sophisticated music for our modern days.

Post-majestic melodic battle metal is my favourite.
Not metal I know, but I love some of Mortiis' old ambient stuff, and I even liked his electro "Smell of rain" era stuff. His newer industrial rock stuff wasn't up to much though I don't think.

Ive been listening to a band called Suicide Silence recently. The name sounds a bit screamo, but its actually some of the most brutal grindcore ive heard......
