Your initial artistic style

Postby metellius » Sun Dec 13, 2009 1:26 pm

So people, what style did you initially start out with? I'm thinking the first song you actually feel you finished.
Do you feel you as an artist will converge towards one artistic style?
I've heard a lot of big artists eventually ending up just repeating the same stuff over and over, and I'm hoping I can be original enough to escape this fate :)

Myself, I started out trying the trancestep style(john b etc), trying to imitate his signature dnb/trance mashup, next I went through trance, then ambient, experimental and now i'm back to drumnbase/trancestep stuff.

Well, too bad this was asked, i always answer this in shame.

I started making uplifting psychedelic trance, some trance sub-genre that i think only had a scene in greece and israel, some 5 or 6 swedish guys made some tracks back then too, but that was all. this was back in '97/'98. Wellknown artists inluded the greek Cherouvim and the israeli Holymen. (Just mentioning in case someone here has heard of them, we can share experiences, may help to heal).

the style is utter crap, you should hear it to believe it. think of the goofiest trance tunes you' ve ever had to listen to. lessen the comlexity by 1/2. replace the 909bd with some awful, clean, vaz-modular generated bd with a "click+shot" clearly audible in the attack stage. add corny alien movie speech samples. play it to 16yr-olds on E.
You 've got yourselves a scene ready to die out the third time the one and only party organizer in your country goes to jail (honest).

it's an awful miracle this thing ever existed.

anyway, after a couple of years of making pretty much nothing but crappy hip-hop productions for some friend to rap on, after having washed the trance experience off as much as possible, i moved on to rythm-noise and drones. still making this shit. been in to making jungle and breakcore about a year or so now, tho i've been spinning the shit since '06. working on getting better, although i feel i've joined the scene at it's peak and now it's kinda dissolving. but wtf, i'll keep working on it cuz mashed breaks kick hella ass.

---
this is the biggest post i've ever made here. god damn, i'm still not over the trance shit. i need some fucking therapy.

people who were into embarassing styles, please post here, don't leave me alone like this.

I started out just last year, making cheesy and dull pastiches of acid house and techno from the 1980s. Then I tried making drum and bass, and then I remembered DnB sucks. I eventually consciously decided to make breakcore, thinking "HUUUUR ALLS I GOTTA DO IS DISTORT AND AMEN BREAK ADD GABBER KICKS DUUUUURR". I'm still basically doing/thinking that, only now it's more influenced by oldschool jungle and also I sometimes make dubstep, so yeah.

I started doing karaoke , I used to sing ELvis, the Beatles, the doors, classic rock and roll stuff...then I started making beats and then I got hooked with breaks.
