i seen that computer music magazine of DJ Producer in the studio and he said he was using a gabber kick from hellfish.

one come to mind, Venetian Snares song "c8 diversity" which has been sampled almost as much as the amen break in breakcore.

haha i can recall in my early producing years just downloading what ever breakcore was out there just so i could sample peoples gabber kicks from Doormouse to fff to snares to nasenbluten, all my early gabber kicks were all midrange, now i have to layer them and mod the fuck out out of them to get the tone i never seem to achieve

I can never produce interesting roaring kicks. I can faff around on synths or overdrive some regular kicks and get these very classic 90s sounding kicks, the sort of stuff that basically defined 90s European hardcore. A lot of producers now are producing these really powerful kicks that must use loads of distortion techniques, but sound so modded that they can't simply have begun life as a dance kick.

at 2:30 there for example, Hellfish has created a right gnarly kick. Sounds like maybe it has a bit of a pogo/pitch wobble effect on it.

Most my kicks that I modify or produce from scratch (i.e when i'm not sampling them) tend to take on this classic early hardcore sound, like this one >

From about 51 seconds onwards. Like I say classic ringy Gabber kick but not as thick or distorted as is the stuff in newer hardcore.

Maybe i'm just using some of the FL distortions to their full potential, I dunno, I hear other well-established FL producers churning out some killer stuff.

I usually layer about 4 kicks over the top of eachother, turning them all down in volume so it doesnt break my speakers.

also, this is quite a good method......

find a really beefy subby distorted noise, fade it in really really quickly and layer it over the top of a proper mid rangey clubby kick with a high pass filter at around 30-70 hz so the waves kinda look like this......

you get a nice off-beat release from the kick this way.

also worth a mention I feel is shitmat - shut up (hellfish remix) ... this track is actually pretty wank for like the first 4 minutes, doesn't seem to go anywhere...then towards the end it finally breaks into one of the most glorious kicks ive ever heard, amazing

yer going to get an average gabber kick sound if you just distort a 909.

but if you mod a kick from a synth you can add layers.

it helps to frequency split or to use multiband distortion, and resample and rinse and repeat till yer satisfied

iv never sampled a hellfish kick btw, dont think any of my kicks sound like his... the producer thing was basicaly 'were not gonna tell you how to make a kick drum, make the fucker yourself' kinda thing.

and hell no does fish give his kicks out hahaha! if he did id definatley know that the old age was turning into dementia

i do agree theres a lot of ppl that do just straight rip the drums... some people just work out how to replicate to an extent... its not hard to get close... but no one exactly gets a proper classic fish kicker

bryan fury on the other hand i think is the current champ of HUGE fucking kickers

best thing to make a gabber kick is too get a monosynth - pref a real one,
use an envolope to control the pitch of a square wave OSC (ie use the envolope to get the pitch to dive quickly) - play with the decay time.... add a filter - youll get some amazing results, dont even need distortion sometimes....
