Any keyboard can be used with every key as a midi trigger, spend a few bucks on a used one and you've got a big bank o' live potential.

Start with cheap gear and work your way up. When you buy used, it's usually pretty easy to get back most if not all of what you paid when it comes time to sell something and upgrade. Sometimes you can even make a little extra, if you got a really good deal. Danelectro and Behringer pedals, Squier guitar/bass, Crate practice amp, Yamaha keyboard, etc, all good places to start. A $20 distortion pedal can make a $50 keyboard sound like a killing machine.

I started out on Acid 3 with no gear...then I got my first Yamaha keyboard, a tiny little Behringer mixer and a distortion pedal, and it was instant addiction. It never ends. I have a big beer stein that I use for a piggy-bank, and I put money into it every week as soon as I get paid, to save up for the gear I want. I've built up a pretty nice collection of stuff over the last 7 years or so by doing it that way. I keep an eye on Craigslist and ebay for good deals, and have found plenty of good stuff for good prices that way. Sometimes I'll see things I don't really need for crazy cheap on craigslist, and get them just to resell for profit on ebay. Once you have a good grasp on what everything is worth, it's pretty easy to make a little side business out of it.
