Hi, and Help Please?

Postby Bsmovies » Sun Oct 28, 2007 12:18 pm

hi, ive been into listening breakcore for a while, and lurking this site and forums for a bit. But now i want to get into making it, ive read all i can find, and ive listened to alot of breakcore so i understand the structure of it. but i need pointers, and preferably guides on how to actually make it, as im in the dark there. whatever i try sounds like a clean (lame) drum loop that a 11 year old could make.

Im taking A levels in music production and performance, so i have Cubase sx3, Alberton Live 6 and Fruity Loops 7. out of them, im most proficient in cubase :)

dont use drum loops, as it will just sound samey. split the break into individual hits and rearrange those into something new.

this is easy to do in a tracker, i've never used cubase or live or anything so you figure that bit out :)

The slicer in Fruity Loops, shove a drum break in to your FL samples folder, then inside the program, find the loop and right click on it and select "send/open to splicer". Then you can start meddling with the structure.

If your understanding of structure is good, as you say, and your loops are "too clean" then maybe you need some distortion, most effective and useful types, especially breakcore style are overdrive, bit crushing, and flange.... chop your breaks into individual hits, process them, render to sample and reload... you'll probably need at least 20 unique hits to make a decent track but you could easily end up with 50+... do your sequencing, and then you can polish and add a few isolated effects later. hope this helps with your sound

experiment with writing breaks and drums, and also sculpting sounds with effects and settings. just keep doing it over and over again.

cheers guys, i realised what i was doing wrong.

i didnt have enough drum types in my mixes, as in i only had 5 or 6, when now im putting 15+ and it sounds alot better.

also, good news. i get to use my college's soundsystem to make breakcore. thats a £2000 media pc, 2 midi controllers, pa system, £1000 mixer and triple screen setup :). loaded with cubase sx 3 :) so im well on the way to making alright-ish breakcore :)

::edit::

heres my first proper try at anything. (it can be streamed)

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/7/22/ ... ore%29.mp3

i know i have alot of work to do, as thats not complete, it needs more filling (effects etc). im happy with the main drumline, which is a (laaammeee) mixed amen beat, with double and quadruple kicks in it, ran at 200bpm. but it shouldnt loop like it does, should it :(

you need to cut that break up and mash it to shit, can't just loop it, that's cheating heh. also the drums are too quiet :)

have a listen to this:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ayea9r

its a render of a demo i made from someone else on this forum, see if you can get your drums to do some of the stuff in that

i hate that thing i linked, my first peice.

i spent a whole day mashing etc, generally messing. and have improved alot. and kinda discovered my style. it isnt a load and uber fast like speedcore. my style is more dark and trancy, with mashed drums and alot of grinds :)

when ive done enough of this peice, ill link to show what i mean.

::edit::

my stuff sounds like a mix of this http://ihatebreakcore.com/modules.php?n ... rack&tid=3 with venetian snares (you know, the slower trancy dark sound of some of venetian snares stuff)
