personally I'm more about all the free shit that goes down. but I will pay for a couple individual showcases if it's gonna rock.

this is a list of free shit, there are other sites, I'll post them when they start getting more shows... keep in mind it's early so even this list doesnt really have shit yet, but a couple weeks before, there will be more shit then you'd even have time for anyway.

i didnt know that you can submit for consideration, if they like your stuff they will book you.

i have always wanted to go, but still never make it out.

basically, anyone can play sxsw. you pay them an "application fee" and they book you. you don't make any money unless you bring CDs to sell and merch, etc. The whole week is more of a networking event for artists, producers, labels, etc. I think the "consideration" part is really just saying that they will try to match you/your band up with the right event. most events seem to follow a good flow, it's not just random bands getting on a stage. they keep shows to rock, then hiphop, then metal, and so on.

yeah they typically put out a 2 cd set as a torrent, single tracks from all the performers.
