i saw him play many years ago & he was using a cardboard box stuffed with his jacket for a kick drum. it looks like he has a real one now

The Ondes Martenot is one of my favourites ever!
I really, really love the rubab, an instrument played in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. I like the distinctly Afghan stlye of playing it the best though. The style is rhythmically and harmonically influenced quite heavily by Hindustani music. Like in Hindustani music tablas set the rhythm, but the decay on the notes is something that no Indian instrument has, and the fact that it's fretted lends a different playing style to it, with more staccatto plucking and less focus on glissando like you have in Indian music. The Indian sarod is built a lot like it, but sounds a lower register and has no frets.

My personal favorite the optron, a miked-up fluorescent light tube run through an array of effects pedals.
